More than 200 students, families, and community members from across the South Sound gathered Feb. 3 for a Maritime|253 open house. The evening gave attendees an inside look at the new Maritime Skills Center and the hands-on learning opportunities that will be available to students.

The strong turnout reflects a growing excitement and interest from students and the community.

“We’re so grateful for this chance to connect with students and families in-person,” said Maritime|253 Director, Kristie Wolford. “This has been an extraordinary team and partner effort to create our program offerings and curriculum for Maritime|253.”

Since opening enrollment in November many interested students have shared their interest in hands-on learning and education that is connected to future careers. That sentiment was shared by event attendees.

“I think it’s really cool,” said Artemis S., IDEA student. “I like doing hands-on stuff and this seems very hands-on.”

“I want her to have experience in so many different areas,” said parent Eltah Brinson. “To where she is doing something useful and learn how to think, as opposed to just memorizing.”

Partners, including UW Tacoma, Clover Park Technical College, the Port of Tacoma, BNBuilders, and TCF Architecture were also in attendance, each answering questions related to their role in Maritime|253.

The Port of Tacoma also captured some of the excitement from students and families, featuring the open house in their latest episode of the Working Waterfront.

Enrollment is now open to high school students across the South Sound, with a priority deadline of March 1. Students will be notified of acceptance in March.
